This show is the cornerstone event of two weekends of activities planned to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Mountain. It is being widely marketed, is attracting tour buses, and should draw large audiences. This story of love across the battlelines has the potential to become an annual event. So be a part not only of bringing history alive, but of making history!
We need 25+ more talented performers to complete our cast. Many will play multiple roles. Singing is helpful but not required. A list of characters is given below so you might see a role that fits you. If not, come audition and let us decide. We are also looking for a dedicated crew.
Constance Armstrong’s family:
Judge Charles Armstrong, over 60, her beloved father
Harriet Armstrong, over 50, her aristocratic mother
Yager family:
Amanda Yager, 25-35,Constance’s older sister
Alex Yager, 25-35, Amanda’s husband
Hudson Yager, their son, age 8 or older
David Yager, their son, age 6 or older
Jordan African-American family:
Abraham Jordan, over 50 free servant of the Armstrongs
Joseph Jordan, Sadie and Abraham’s adult son, 25-35
Selene Jordan, Joseph’s wife, 25-35
Hope and Isaac Jordan, Joseph and Selene’s children, below age 10
George McDonald, over 50 editor of the newspaper
Rev. John Cole, over 50 Episcopal minister
Granny Ashby, over 70 feisty and outspoken
Lucy Ashby, over 15, her granddaughter,
Jane Ashby, over 12, her granddaughter
Mrs. Marsten, over 50 helps dress Stringfellow for the ball
Sally Marsten, over 15, her daughter
There are many speaking and nonspeaking townspeople, as well as Union and Confederate soldiers who will play multiple roles and join in group singing. Many of the soldiers are listed below:
Confederate officers:
Redmund Burke, over 35, tall scout and friend of Frank Stringfellow
Will Farley, dashing Confederate scout from S.C. and friend of Stringfellow
Rooney Lee, over 25, tall son of R. E. Lee, cavalry general
John Mosby, over 25, small partisan ranger known as the “Gray Ghost”
J.E.B. Stuart, over 25, flamboyant commander of the Confederate cavalry, singing is helpful
Union officers:
Major Bennett, over 30 Union officer who occupies the Armstrong home during the Winter Encampment
George Armstrong Custer, 22-26 Union cavalry general and cousin of Aaron Ames
Judson Kilpatrick, over 25 unscrupulous cavalry officer called “Kil-cavalry”
John Pope, over 35 Union general who employed “total warfare”
Ulric Dahlgren, over 24 officer
The original music of the show was written by Rod Stone or Anacortes, Washington. Rod Stone’s songs have been recorded by Lee Greenwood, Crystal Gayle, Ricky Lee Watson, Jeff and Sheri Easter, and George Hamilton IV. Two of the original love songs written for Marching Through Culpeper were professionally recorded in Nashville February 20-25, 2012, and will be marketed nationwide as wedding songs.
