150th Anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Mountain

Two weekends of activities, August 3-5, 9-12, 2012

 Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 

Currently members of the Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield, the Brandy Station Foundation, the Germanna Colonies Foundation, Stage Works, the State Theater Foundation, and the Culpeper County Public Schools are working together to produce a stage production of Virginia Morton’s Civil War novel, “Marching through Culpeper” that has sold over 10,000 copies. Original music has been written by Rod Stone of Anacortes, Washington.  The purposes of this nonprofit endeavor are: to educate through entertainment, increase tourism, and raise funds for battlefield preservation in Culpeper County. 

Synopsis: Marching Through Culpeper  

“Love across the battle lines”

Headstrong Constance Armstrong of Culpeper, Virginia—epicenter of the Civil War—struggles to keep her family alive while joining her surrogate brother, Confederate scout Frank Stringfellow, in espionage. But when she takes a wounded Union soldier into her home, their growing attraction pushes her courage to life-changing levels.

 5:00 –7:00 p.m.World Premiere Reception” at the Daniel Technology Center, 18121 Technology Drive, Culpeper, VA 22701 with honored guests Dr. James Robertson, Civil War historian; two descendants of real characters in the show—Dr. Frank Stringfellow, great-grandson of Confederate scout, Frank Stringfellow; and Jeb Stuart IV, great-grandson of the famous Confederate general; plus the show’s original music and lyric writer, Rod Stone; and more.

This festive event with music, wine, and tantalizing food is an opportunity for people from near and far to gather and celebrate Marching Through Culpeper coming to life on stage. Price of $95 includes not only the reception but also admission to the Premiere performance with  priority seating  and an exclusive intermission dessert buffet for “World Premiere Reception” ticket holders. 7:30 p.m. Multimedia Premiere Performance of Marching Through Culpeper at Eastern View High School, 16332 Cyclone Way, Culpeper, VA 22701. The facility seats 950 and there is plenty of room for those who want to attend the performance only. Advance show tickets — Adults: $18, under age-18: $9. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 

 

 

9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.Walking Tour of historic downtown Culpeper to include locations in the book and stage production conducted by author, Virginia Morton. The tours will begin at the depot Visitor Center, 111 Commerce Street, Culpeper,  VA 22701. Admission: $10 for adults, $5 for under age-18. 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Salubria, a Georgian manor house built in 1757, will be open with activities involving Civil War re-enactors. Encampment is free, tours of Salubria $10. www.germanna.org, 540-423-1700

Dr. James Robertson

12:30 p.m. – Luncheon with Dr. James Robertson at the Inn at Kelly’s Ford. Plan to spend the entire afternoon at the historic and scenic Inn at Kelly’s Ford, 16589 Edwards Shop Rd., Remington, VA 22734-1877. See www.innatkellysford.com or call: 540-399-1779. Luncheon activities begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Kelly’s Ford Arena with a barbeque buffet. Afterwards esteemed scholar and retired Virginia Tech history professor, Dr. James Robertson, will speak on the conflict between A. P. Hill and Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain. Dr. Robertson will sign his newest book The Untold Civil War. Other activities include a cavalry demonstration, artillery demonstration near Kelly’s Ford, the heaviest-used ford of the Civil War. Silent auction items will be offered for sale to benefit the Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield. Tickets are $40. On the Cedar Mountain Battlefield 6:30 p.m. 

EVENING PROGRAM ON THE BATTLEFIELD – 6:30 PM to dusk; program featuring walking tours, stationary lectures; infantry and artillery living historians, an artillery demonstration, and a closing service to honor those who fought at Cedar Mountain. The public will be invited to identify and comment briefly on their ancestors who fought at Cedar Mountain. BRING SEATING TO THIS EVENT. Water will be provided. $10 parking fee.

10 a.m. Two-hour Kelly’s Ford & Stevensburg Tour departs from the Graffiti House, 19484 Brandy Rd., Brandy Station, VA 22714. Tour covers the June 9, 1863 Union river crossing at Kelly’s Ford, and then follows the route of Union cavalry commanded by Col. Alfred Duffie to Stevensburg where Capt. William Farley, JEB Stuart’s volunteer scout, was mortally wounded. $10, caravan, arrive before 10 a.m., sponsored by the Brandy Station Foundation.
